Book of the Week #60: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
What It’s About
Feyre has undergone more trials than one human woman can carry in her heart. Though she's now been granted the powers and lifespan of the High Fae, she is haunted by her time Under the Mountain and the terrible deeds she performed to save the lives of Tamlin and his people.
As her marriage to Tamlin approaches, Feyre's hollowness and nightmares consume her. She finds herself split into two different one who upholds her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court, and one who lives out her life in the Spring Court with Tamlin. While Feyre navigates a dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms. She might just be the key to stopping it, but only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future and the future of a world in turmoil.
Bestselling author Sarah J. Maas's masterful storytelling brings this second book in her dazzling, sexy, action-packed series to new heights.
What I Liked About This Book
People’s obsession with this book online was the main reason I picked up this series.
So my expectations were very high for this second one. Especially because I had enjoyed the first one so much.
However, I have to say that I’m not used to reading big books. Most books that I read are around 300-400 pages. This one was 626. And I felt it.
The first half of the book is also slow-paced with a focus on new characters’ introductions and world-building.
I started to notice myself getting distracted more and not having the urge to read like I did with the first one. It got to a point where I thought I was getting into a reading slump and decided to take a break and read a light-hearted romance to keep the momentum going.
But I’m so glad I gave this book a real chance and finished it.
Now I understand the obsession everyone has.
The new characters Mor, Azriel, Cassian and Amren are all so interesting that fell in love with them all. Funny and intricate with their own backstories, after reading this book, I feel like I know them personally.
However, there were a lot of changes in this book which made me not love it as much as the first one.
It felt a little bit like the author regretted the choices she made in the first book.
In this second book, we see characters we fell in love with in the first book become complete opposites of what they seemed to be. As well as some villains become heroes.
On the other hand, this added a bit of ✨drama✨ to the story, which I quite enjoyed, to be honest. It sounds quite unsatisfying now thinking back, but it kept me completely clueless of what could happen next.
Other than that, I really enjoyed it.
Fayre’s character development is, without a doubt, the biggest strength of this book.
We see this young fragile girl become a strong and powerful woman who fights for what’s right.
We see her struggling with the trauma of what she went through Under the Mountain and how she deals with all the complex feelings of guilt and sorrow she feels towards everything that happened and its consequences.
Overall, this is such an incredible world, full of complex characters and life stories and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance fantasy or is looking to get into this genre.
