Hello, fellow book lover!
Hope you had a great week.
As you’re reading this, I’ll be in Portugal enjoying some frango churrasco, frasesinhas, and lots and lots of pastries.
I won’t be enjoying the sun this time since it’s autumn now but it’ll still be warmer than in Ireland so that’s great. It’s been too cold here. It’s too early for 3ºC mornings.
I’m writing this in advance to make sure you get this email even when I’m on holiday. But don’t worry, the updates are all still up to date.
I’m visiting my sister this week. We haven’t seen each other in 3 years so I’m enjoying my time with her.
But she’s a book lover too and so you best believe that we’re going to spend hours talking about books.
Since I won’t be reading that much this week, I won’t have that many reading updates to share with you.
So I decided to make this Bookish Update a bit different and share with you my sister’s favorite books.
Currently Reading:
The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut.
Reading Next:
When I think of horror books, Stephen King’s books come to my mind. Especially The Shinning.
This book is a classic, and I feel like I’m finally ready to read it and watch the movie after.
This is actually our Book Club’s pick for this month, so if this is something you’re interested in reading, join the club by becoming a paid subscriber!
Once you become a paid subscriber, you’ll get an email with a link to our exclusive Discord server where you can connect with other book lovers, start a buddy read, share your favorite books, and find the next book you want to read. It’s on our Discord that we have our monthly book club discussions.
You also get another weekly email (usually on Fridays) where I share what I’ve been reading, book quotes I love, and other bookish things I’ve been enjoying that week. This is the Bookish Friday email that you’re reading right now.
My sister’s favorite books:
The most famous and beloved stories from the Queen of Mystery.
First, there were ten—a curious assortment of strangers summoned as weekend guests to a little private island off the coast of Devon. Their host, an eccentric millionaire unknown to all of them, is nowhere to be found. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they're unwilling to reveal—and a secret that will seal their fate. For each has been marked for murder.
Also titled as The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.
A brilliantly original high concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception, by way of Agatha Christie and Black Mirror.
'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.'
It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.
But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.
The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath...
The House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast (she’s cheating here but I’ll allow it)
House of Night is a thrilling, New York Times bestselling young adult fantasy series. The books follow 16-year-old Zoey Redbird as she is "Marked" by a vampyre tracker and begins to undergo the “Change” into an actual vampyre. She has to leave her family in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and move into the House of Night, a boarding school for other fledgling vampyres like her.
It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends. It gets even harder for Zoey to fit in when she finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. As Zoey tries to make new friends and maybe find a hot boyfriend (or two), she comes up against all kinds of evil. Things at the House of Night are not always what they seem. Can Zoey find the courage deep within herself to find the truth and embrace her destiny?
Quote of the week:
This is my sister’s favorite quote. When she read it for the first time, it actually made her laugh, which it’s rare for a book to have that effect on her considering she mostly reads crime novels.
“It is you, mon ami? Attend, I pray. I have news for you. Splendid news.
Somebody has tried to kill me..."
― Agatha Christie, Mrs Mcginty's Dead
